Carol

Carol has been the toast of the festival circuit for some time and the movie is being tipped to be a major Oscar contender when the nominations are announced at the beginning of next year.

We are huge fans of Cate Blanchett here at FemaleFirst and we cannot wait to see her take on the title role alongside Rooney Mara; this will see the two actresses share the screen together for the very first time.

Blanchett and Mara take on the role of Carol Aird and Therese Belivet, a married woman and a department store worker who fall in love 1950s New York. The movie is a big screen adaptation of the Patricia Highsmith novel The Price of Salt, which as bee adapted by Phyllis Nagy.

Blanchett and Mara are joined on the cast list by Sarah Paulson, Kyle Chandler, Cory Michael Smith, and Jake Lacy.

The movie marks the return of Todd Haynes to the director's chair. He has brought us movies such as Far From Heaven and Safe during his career, but this is his first feature since I'm Not There back in 2007 - it also marks the second time that he has teamed up with Blanchett.

A young woman in her 20s, Therese Belivet (Mara) is a clerk working in a Manhattan department store and dreaming of a more fulfilling life when she meets Carol (Blanchett), an alluring woman trapped in a loveless, convenient marriage. As an immediate connection sparks between them, the innocence of their first encounter dims and their connection deepens.

While Carol breaks free from the confines of marriage, her husband (Chandler) threatens her competence as a mother when Carol's involvement with Therese and close relationship with her best friend Abby (Paulson) comes to light. As Carol leaves the comfort of home to travel with Therese, an internal journey of self-discovery coincides with her new sense of space.

Blanchett already has one Best Actress Oscar to her name - winning for Blue Jasmine - but she looks set to be well and truly in the mix for her latest performance. Mara also looks set to pick the second Oscar nomination for her career.

Carol is released 27th November.
