McQuarrie is set to return to the Mission: Impossible franchise to helm the sixth instalment of the popular action franchise. He took up the director's chair for the first time for Mission: Impossible: Rogue Nation, which has been a huge hit this year.

This movie marked the second time that McQuarrie had worked with Tom Cruise, the pair teamed up for the first time on Jack Reacher.

And while McQuarrie has been doing the rounds to promote the home release of Rogue Nation, he has talked a little about the upcoming Mission: Impossible 6.

Speaking to Collider, the director said: "Look, we definitely have to raise the bar, we've got to do that every time.

"And we have an idea for one sequence in particular and it's one we're very, very excited about. It's going to be incredibly challenging to do, and we're very excited."

The movie will see Tom Cruise reprise the role of Ethan Hunt while Rebecca Ferguson is also believed to be returning as Ilsa Faust. There's still no word on who else may or may not be back.

While no official release date for the sixth film has been announced, we could see it hit the big screen as early as 2017, which means filming would get underway next year.

Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation was one of the big summer movies and it was a critical hit as well as a huge box office success. The film has grossed over $682 million at the global box office and is currently the seventh highest grossing movie of the year.
