Chronicle has held off The Woman In Black as the two new entries battled it out for the top spot at the American box office.

And by taking just $1 million extra in the opening weekend Chronicle is the #1 movie.

Directed by Josh Trank the movie follows three high school friends who gain superpowers after making an incredible discovery.

Soon, though, they find their lives spinning out of control and their bond tested as they embrace their darker sides.

The Woman In Black sees Daniel Radcliffe return to the big screen in his first post Potter role.

The movie is an adaptation of the popular Susan Hill novel but it had to settle for second as it took $21 million in the first weekend.
