Zobel has returned to the director's chair for the first time since Compliance back in 2012 for the new film, which played at Sundance earlier this year.

The movie sees Margot Robbie, Chris Pine, and Chiwetel Ejiofor take on the central roles of Ann, Caleb, and Loomis, and the director says there was no master plan when he was bringing these actors together.

Speaking to Collider, the director said: "It was really organic. It wasn't like any sort of big 'you know who would be great for this movie?' I met all three of these actors around the same time and everyone was interested.

"I was like 'I have this script that I am fascinated in' and we all talked about it with each other. So it kind of came together really organically in that way. It wasn't a highly designed thing."

Z For Zachariah is set after a disaster has wiped out most of mankind and sees two men come across a woman who thought she was the only one who had survived. A love triangle develops between these survivors as Caleb and Loomis fight for Ann's affection.

Z For Zachariah is based on the book of the same name by Robert C. O'Brien was met with acclaim when it was screened at Sundance at the end of January.

The movie received its premiere at Sundance, where it was one of the festival highlights winning over critics and audiences.

The movie will mark the return of Robbie to the big screen for the first time since The Wolf of Wall Street and kicks off what will be a busy year for the actress - she has Tarzan and Focus on the horizon.

We have already seen Pine in Into The Woods, while this is the first role for Ejiofor since he starred in the adaptation of Half of a Yellow Sun.

Z For Zachariah is yet to received a UK release date.
