Deadpool has been the biggest hit of the year so far and the comic book movie keeps on raking in the cash at the global box office.

The Ryan Reynolds driven film has smashed through the $700 million mark worldwide and has surpassed the totals set by Iron Man and Man of Steel in 2008 and 2013.

Iron Man kicked off the Marvel Universe franchise and grossed over $585 million at the global box office - rather modest compared to the totals that Iron Man 3, Avengers Assemble and Avengers: Age of Ultron have posted in recent years.

Man of Steel marked the return of Superman to the big screen and grossed $668 million - it was no match for Iron Man 3 that grossed over $1 billion that same year.

But now Deadpool is flexing his box office muscles and continues to win over critics and audiences and performs well.

The movie has hit $700 million in less than five weeks and it will be interesting to see just how close to the $1 billion mark it actually gets.

Deadpool now has Captain America: The Winter Solider and Guardians of the Galaxy in its sights, which grossed $714 million and $773 million in 2014.

The movie sees Reynolds return to the role of Wade Wilson in what is the first solo film for the popular character. There is already a sequel believed to be in the pipeline and Reynolds reveals that he would like to expand this universe even further by starring in an X-Force film as soon as possible.

Deadpool kicked off what will be a terrific year for comic book films with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Captain America: Civil War, X-Men: Apocalypse and Suicide Squad all on the horizon. Which film will come out on top in terms of how much money it makes at the box office? Will any of them gross over $1 billion?

Deadpool is still in UK cinemas.
