Deadpool has broken through the $500 million at the global box office after just over two weeks on release.

Deadpool

The R-rated comic book movie sees Ryan Reynolds return to the role of Wade Wilson in what has been both a critical and now commercial smash.

Reynolds took on the role of Wilson for the first time in X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2009 and a solo movie has been in the pipeline ever since - at times, it looked like it wasn't going to happen.

But Deadpool was one of the most talked about and anticipated films of 2016 and it has not disappointed. The movie is top of the UK and U.S. box office and has now grossed $513 million worldwide so far.

It is currently the highest grossing movie of the year so far and is on course to be one of the most successful R-rated movies of all time.

The movie sees Tim Miller in the director's chair as he has made his feature film directorial debut with the project. The movie is based on the comic creations by Fabian Nicieza and Rob Liefeld and has been adapted for the big screen by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.

Deadpool has brought together and all-star cast as Reynolds stars alongside Morena Baccarin, Ed Skrein, T.J. Miller, and Gina Carano.

A Deadpool sequel is already in the pipeline and Reynolds has revealed that he would love to be part of an X-Force movie at some point in the near future.

2016 is set to be a great year for comic book films as there are some huge movies on the horizon. Deadpool may have been the first to be released, but it has set a very high bar for the rest to match.

Deadpool is out now.
