Peter Webber, the director of the Academy Award nominated film, 'Girl with a Pearl Earring', is working on a new film project based on an early 19th century painting.

Webber- who launched actress Scarlett Johansson into the spotlight with his 2003 debut - has now begun work on a new project.

The similarly art themed movie will be based on an early 19th century painting and is working under the title, 'Medusa.'.

Speaking at a film festival in Ukraine, Webber said he was planning to catch up with his work after taking a break from feature films for several years.

He told The Hollywood Reporter: "I am hoping to catch up and line up some projects and bang out a few films in a row to make up for some of the down times over the last ten years."

However, the director wouldn't confirm which painting will be getting his film treatment, but did hint that it's famous enough for art geeks to guess.

He said: "Anyone who knows their art history will be able to guess which painting the film is about."

Raphaelle De Laurentiis, the daughter of 'Hannibal Rising' producer Dino De Laurentiis, is set to produce the film alongside Peter.
