Drew Goddard says he isn't going to write and or direct Marvel's standalone Spider-Man film having spent a year working on Sinister Six.

Goddard had been tipped to direct his first Marvel film when it was announced that Spider-Man would be getting a reboot and Marvel would be behind the new film project.

However, Goddard has been working on Sony's Sinister Six film and was set to take up the director's chair on that project - but now he is not. And working on Sinister Six is a big reason why he will not be directing Spider Man.

Speaking to CinemaBlend Goddard said: "I mean, I think that's more a question for them, but here's the good news. I've worked with Marvel a lot. The way that Marvel sort of works is they say, 'Hey, do you have an idea for... Here's the movies we're thinking about making...' They sort of tell the world what they're thinking of making, and they sort of put out there, if you have an idea for any of these, come talk to us.

And I think, with Spider-Man, I didn't really have an idea. Part of that might have just been because I had just written one. I spent a year working on Sinister Six, and I think I was like in a head space where I just didn't... you know, it's very hard to say, 'Ok, now write a new movie.' So, it never got that far. We never, it never got taken that far. They know how much respect I have for them."

Goddard is no stranger to the Marvel world, having penned the screenplay for hit Marvel television show Daredevil and the writer/director is confident that he and Marvel will find the right film project in the future.

He continued: "They've been very nice to me over the years, and I know sooner or later, we're going to find the right project. It's all about timing."

Tom Holland is set to take over the role of Peter Parker and we will be introduced to the character for the first time in Captain America: Civil War next year. He will then go on to star in his own solo film.

As for Goddard, he has penned the screenplay for Ridley Scott's The Martian, which is due to hit the big screen at the end of the month. He has also been working on season two of Daredevil.

The new Spider-Man movie will be released in the summer of 2017 - no UK release date has yet been announced.
