Redmayne is already being tipped for more potential awards success for his performance as Lili Ibe, one of the first known recipients of sex reassignment surgery.

The Danish Girl is set to be one of the first 'must see' films of 2016 but it was a challenging role for the British actor.

Speaking to The Sun, the actor said: "It leaves you feeling very exposed and vulnerable. The set itself felt very safe when I would be walking around as Lili but there was still this sense of people watching you and feeling judged.

"Imagine what it must be like for trans women who are constantly facing such judgment as well as discrimination and violence in many cases."

The Danish Girl marks the return of Tom Hooper to the director's chair for the first time since the success of Les Misérables. The movie also sees him reunite with Redmayne for their second film project together.

Alicia Vikander will take on the role of Lili's wife Gerda Wegener, while Amber Heard, Ben Whishaw, and Matthias Schoenaerts are all also on board.

The Danish Girl will be the first time that we have seen Redmayne on the big screen since Jupiter Ascending earlier this year. He is one of the most in demand actors around and is currently filming Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is the latest J.K. Rowling novel to be adapted for the big screen and will see Redmayne take on the central role of new Scamander.

The Danish Girl is released 1st January 2016.
