Elijah Wood has described the opportunity of getting to return to Middle Earth and the character of Frodo Baggins as a 'gift'.

Wood returned to the role in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and is expected to make another appearance in the final instalment The Battle of the Five Armies.

This new role comes a decade after he took on the role of Frodo for the first time in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and Wood admits that he loved the chance to go back as it was totally unexpected.

Speaking to the Press Association, the actor said: "It was a gift. It was like being given an invite to a family reunion. I honestly never thought I would play Frodo again, I never thought I'd go back to Middle Earth.

"I never thought I'd be back in New Zealand in that context, so to be given the chance to come back and visit old friends again and see (Sir Ian) McKellen as Gandalf and so many of the crew members who had worked on Lord Of The Rings, it was a really lovely thing."

"I thought that part of my life was done and I got to see it again without all of the pressure, give it a hug and move on."

The Battle of the Five Armies is the third and final film in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy, which is due to hit the big screen this December.

This will be the sixth and final time that audiences will go to Middle Earth with the filmmaker, and he is set to close The Hobbit franchise with a bang.

As for Wood, he is set to return to the big screen this week with new film Set Fire to the Stars, which sees him star alongside Celyn Jones and work with director Andy Goddard.

The actor is currently filming The Last Witch Hunter with Vin Diesel, Rose Leslie, and Michael Caine, which is the latest offering from director Breck Eisner.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies is released 12th December.
