Clarke met with director Sam Taylor-Johnson to discuss the central role of Anastasia Steele but ultimatley turned down the role - which eventually went to Dakota Johnson.

Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, the actress said: "I'd done nudity before and was concerned with being labeled for doing it again."

Fifty Shades has gone on to be a big box office success and has so far grossed in excess of $558 million worldwide so far.

Clarke may have passed on Fifty Shades of Grey, but she has a very busy 2015 ahead of her. Game of Thrones is set to return to the small screen in just over three weeks, where she will reprise the role of Daenerys Targaryen.

She is also set to begin filming the sixth season of the smash it show later this summer.

Clarke will also be making a return to film as she takes over the role of Sarah Connor in Terminator Genisys, which is the fifth film in the popular franchise.

This is her first film since Dom Hemingway in 2013, as she teams up with Jason Clarke, Jai Courtney, and Arnold Schwarzenegger, while Alan Taylor is in the director's chair.

The actress has also completed work on Voice from the Stone, which is an adaptation of the novel by Silvio Raffo and sees Eric D. Howell in the director's chair.

Terminator Genisys is released 3rd July.
