Evangeline Lilly has described Tauriel as a ‘badass elf’.

Lilly will be back on the big screen this week as she is one of the new faces in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

Tauriel is a new character that has been created especially for the adaptation of the J.R.R. Tolkien novel and Lilly says she is completely different to the elves that we have seen before.

Speaking to Flicks and Bits the actress said: "Yeah, Tauriel is a Silvan Elf who lives in the Woodland Realm. The Woodland Elves are a sort of darker Elf than the Elves we’re used to meeting, or have met from ‘The Lord of the Rings.’

“They are perhaps more deadly. Tauriel’s a warrior and is an expert with daggers and a bow and arrow. Plus, she’s the head of the Silvan Guard. She is in charge of the Elf army, the army of her people. All-in-all she’s a pretty badass Elf (laughs).”

Tauriel is not the only elf that we are going to be seeing more of in the second film in Peter Jackson’s trilogy, as Orlando Bloom will also be returning as Legolas. The Desolation of Smaug will also allow us a closer look at Thranduil played by Lee Pace: a character we got a brief look at in An unexpected Journey.

The Desolation of Smaug marks the return of Lilly to the big screen for the first time since the success of Real Steel.

She will be reprising the role of Tauriel this time next year as she will be back in The Hobbit: There and Back Again - the final instalment in the trilogy.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is released 13th December.
