Earlier this week it was revealed that Gray was in talks with Universal Studios about taking over the director's chair for the eighth instalment of the popular franchise.

Now it has been announced that the filmmaker is on board and he took to Facebook to announced that he was thrilled to be working with Vin Diesel and the studio.

He wrote: "I could not have asked for better partners than Vin Diesel, Neal H. Moritz, & the Universal Studios Entertainment family. Together we are excited to bring you the next chapter in the Fast & Furious saga. ?#?FastFamily?"

Fast & Furious 8 will be the first film that will not feature Paul Walker's character Brian - who we all said farewell to at the end of the seventh film earlier this year.

Gray will take over from James Wan and has a big task ahead of him as Fast & Furious 7 grossed over $1 billion at the global box office and is one of the highest grossing movies of 2015 so far.

Gray has brought us films such as The Italian Job and Be Cool during his career but this will be his first movie since the huge success of Straight Outta Compton earlier this year.

While Gray is no stranger to the director's chair, Fast & Furious 8 is set to be the biggest movie of his career to date.

Fast & Furious 8 is set to hit the big screen in April 2017 and filming on the movie looks set to get underway next year.

There's currently no word on who is going to star in the film, but the likes of Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson are expected to return.

Fast & Furious 8 is released 14th April 2017.
