Jones picked up a Best Actress nod for her central performance as Jane Hawking in biopic The Theory of Everything, which is her first Bafta nomination.

And while Jones was not in the country at the time she says she was looking forward to Skyping her family to celebrate the milestone. She went on to heap praise on the women that were nominated alongside her.

Speaking to the Press Association, the actress said: "It's midnight here. We're just about to go to bed, but we've all been emailing each other and exclaiming with excitement.

"I'm looking forward to celebrating with a glass of champagne and Skyping my family."

"I'm in such a fantastic category of women, and I've admired Julianne Moore for many years, and Reese Witherspoon particularly, and loved their performances in both their films, and I really feel they do revolutionary work in terms of presenting female characters on screen."

The Best Actress Bafta category is going to be a very tough one this year, as Julianne Moore, Reese Witherspoon, Amy Adams, and Rosamund Pike are nominated alongside Jones for Still Alice, Wild, Big Eyes, and Gone Girl.

The awards season is set to be an exciting once for Jones as she has already picked up Best Actress nominations at the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards. She is also expected to be in the mix next week when the Oscar nominations are revealed.

The Theory of Everything picked up ten Bafta nominations including Best Film, Best British Film, Best Actor for Eddie Redmayne and Best Director for James Marsh.

The Theory of Everything is out now.
