The news came via the film's official Twitter page that shooting for the forthcoming movie had concluded in Milford Sound in Fiordland National Park, New Zealand, and they also included a photo from the set showing Sir Ridley Scott and actress Katherine Waterson.

The tweet read: "Filming has wrapped. The next phase begins. #AlienCovenant. (sic)"

Shortly after, the announcement was followed up with the candid on set picture, and the comment: "A new #AlienCovenant still has been released as filming has officially wrapped up! #Alien. (sic)"

Very little is known about the plot, but it is known that the film is both a sequel to 2012's 'Prometheus' and a prequel to 1979's 'Alien' - the film which introduced the Xenomorph creature to the world - both of which were directed by Scott.

Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace are returning in the movie and are joined by newcomers Amy Seimetz, Billy Crudup, Carmen Ejogo, Danny McBride and Katherine Waterson.

Fassbender has shone a little light on proceedings as he reprises his role as android David, promising "aliens coming out of people" and an "impressive set".

The 39-year-old actor said: "There are going to be great sets and aliens coming out of people.

"The sets are fantastic. Again, the most impressive sets I've seen since 'Prometheus', which was the original setting. It's a fantastic mixture of high-end technology and primitive elements. The way that I can explain it is the same way that Ridley did 'Blade Runner'."

'Alien: Covenant' is due for release on August 4, 2017, by 20th Century Fox.
