The first image of Joseph Gordon Levitt as Edward Snowden has been teased by Open Road Films.

Levitt is set to take on the role of Snowden in the brand new biopic from director Oliver Stone - filming is now under way and the movie will be hitting the big screen at the end of the year.

Snowden has become one of the world's most wanted men after leaking thousands of classified documents to the press, but he has become a fascination for moviemakers. CitizenFour, a documentary about Snowden's actions won the Best Documentary Oscar last month.

The movie is based on the books The Snowden Files and Time of the Octupus by Luke Jardina and Anatoly Kucherena, and have been adapted into a screenplay by Stone and Kieran Fitzgerald.

This is set to be another terrific movie from for Gordon-Levitt, and he is joined on the cast list by Shailene Woodley and Melissa Leo. Woodley is set to play Snowden's girlfriend Lindsay Mills, and Citizenfour filmmaker Laura Poitras.

The cast list is completed by Zachary Quinto, Tom Wilkinson, Nicolas Cage, Timothy Olyphant, and Rhys Ifans.

Stone is no stranger to the biopic genre with the likes of Nixon and W. under his belt during his career. However, Snowden is his first feature film since Savages back in 2012 - he has since been working on a documentary movie and television series.

As for Gordon-Levitt, we haven't seen him on the big screen since Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, but it has finished work on The Walk and an untitled Christmas Eve movie.

No UK release date for Snowden has yet been announced.
