The 55-year-old actor will appear alongside Johnny Depp in the movie about the investigation into the murders of hip hop stars Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G. based on the book of the same name by journalist Randall Sullivan.

According to Deadline, Whitaker is to play reporter "Jack" Jackson who teams up with Russell Poole, the detective who headed the investigation to try to crack the unsolved case.

Depp will star as the LAPD detective, who later became convinced that the rapper's death was caused by "gangsta cops" in his force.

But his theory has been shelved by others, including fellow Los Angeles police detective Greg Kading, who believes it was more likely to be gang members who were responsible for the rapper's untimely death.

Brad Furman is directing and Miriam Segal is producing the project, which is set to start production soon.

Christian Contreras is penning the script adapted from Sullivan's book, 'LAbyrinth: A Detective Investigates the Murders of Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G., the Implication of Death Row Records' Suge Knight, and the Origins of the Los Angeles Police Scandal'.

Whitaker has a busy time coming up as he is due to appear in 'Star Wars: Rogue One', recently signed up for Marvel movie 'Black Panther' and is to appear in 'Arrival' alongside Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner.
