Gadot returns as Diana Prince and her heroic alter ego in the standalone movie due out next year.

Gadot says the film will tell the story of Prince's journey to the Wonder Woman seen fighting alongside Batman and Superman in blockbuster 'Dawn of Justice'.

She said: "In 'Batman v Superman', you get a glimpse of who she is but not where she comes from. In 'Wonder Woman', this would be the first time we ever tell the coming-of-age story of how Diana becomes Wonder Woman. It's very interesting. It has moments of humour, but it's pretty dark."

The story of Wonder Woman dates back a century to her beginnings as the warrior princess of the Amazons.

She added: "We go back 100 years to when she's more naïve. She's this young idealist. She's pure. Very different to the experienced, super-confident, grown-up woman you've seen."

'Wonder Woman' is due for release on June 2, 2017 and is being directed by Patty Jenkins - who wrote and directed 2003's 'Monster' - and also stars Chris Pine, Robin Wright and Connie Nielsen.
