Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is set to be one of the biggest films to be released later this year as the much-loved franchise gets a spin-off film.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is set after A New Hope and will expand the Star Wars Universe even further by taking us to new planets.

One of the new planets is Jedha, a holy place of pilgrimage for Jedi. And director Gareth Edwards has dropped more hints about what we can expect from this new world.

Speaking to EW, the filmmaker said: "It's a place where people who believe in the Force would go on a pilgrimage. It was essentially taken over by the Empire. It's an occupied territory... for reasons we probably can't reveal...

"There's something very important in Jedha that serves both the Jedi and the Empire. It felt very much like something we could relate to in the real world."

And while Jedha is a world that is facing a few problems with the Empire, Edwards reveals that there is a 'resistance' building up against them.

He continued: "Within Jedha, even though there's the oppressive foot of the Empire hanging over them, there's a resistance that won't give up and our characters have to go and meet people there to try and secure a person from this group."

Rogue One: a Star Wars Story was one of the biggest movies at Comic-Con last month and I cannot wait to see what Edwards delivers will this first Star Wars spin-off film.

This is the third feature film of Edwards' career and comes after success with Monster and Godzilla.

Oscar-nominated actress Felicity Jones takes on the central role of Jyn Erso and is joined on the cast list by Riz Ahmed, Ben Mendelsohn, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Donnie Yen, Diego Luna, Warwick Davis, and Forest Whitaker.

The movie is released a year after the huge critical and commercial success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and a year before Star Wars VIII hits the big screen.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is released 16th December.
