Clooney had agreed to a role with the film, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Amy Adams, but reportedly decided to opt out of the project following a disagreement with the fashion designer and director, who is currently in Cannes, Frances meeting international distributors to secure funding for the dark thriller.

A source told the New York Post newspaper: "Ford is in Cannes because George Clooney was to produce the movie through his Smokehouse Pictures, with Grant Heslov.

"But they had a huge falling out over creative issues a few weeks ago, and Clooney is no longer involved."

However, Clooney has denied there's been any disagreement between himself and Ford, 53.

He said: "No falling out at all. It was just scheduling. Grant and I love the project and think Tom is fantastic. We just couldn't do it when he needed to go."

Meanwhile, a source in Cannes - where the annual film festival is currently being staged - said: "Tom has been taking a lot of meetings to present the movie, and it is garnering a lot of excitement. The roles for Gyllenhaal and Adams are very strong."

'Nocturnal Animals' is an adaptation of Austin Wright's 1993 novel 'Tony and Susan'.
