Hugh Jackman is very clear about Logan being his final movie in the mantle of Wolverine, and has now opened up a little about the story fans should expect when the flick hits the big screen a little later this year.

Speaking to Digital Spy, Jackman explained: “I so loved doing these scenes with Patrick [Stewart]. I felt we had more nuanced drama in this movie than we’ve had in all the others.

“Part of this movie is like Little Miss Sunshine, and this relationship is a kind of complex relationship with a father-type figure where he’s really trying not to get involved.

“But also [it explores] just how hard it is on a day-to-day basis to look after someone who’s got dementia. The whole movie is the collateral damage of life. What is it like to have been a soldier? To have been a warrior? To have been a killer?

“And also the day-to-day of looking after someone you love and it annoys you, it’s frustrating and all of those human emotions. And to be struggling to pay the bills and to be sick yourself and just to be able to get through the day.

“I loved that we’re down to that. ‘Can I get through another day?’ Not, ‘Can I save the world?’ [Instead it’s] ‘Can I make it through to tonight?’

The comments came after director James Mangold told Digital Spy: “We find Logan living in hiding and protecting a very ailing Charles Xavier, who has a degenerative brain disease. What could be more potent than the world’s most powerful brain with Alzheimer’s?”

The comments show that whilst X-Men movies in the past have been full of action and chaos and typical superhero world saving scenes, Logan is going to be a different beast entirely. Now officially an R-rated movie and with a second trailer showing just how bloody and violent the flick could be, this could be a welcome step in a new direction for the film property.

Logan comes to cinemas and theaters in the UK and USA on March 3.
