Idris Elba

Idris Elba has described shooting inside the simulators created for the actors playing pilots in Pacific Rim as a 'painful' experience.

The actor spent three days shooting in the simulator for the scenes where his character is controlling a giant robot in Pacific Rim.

And while Elba says that it was an 'unbelievable experience' there was also some pain involved as well.

Speaking to the Press Association the actor said: "I did three days in the con pod, so I'm really not the one to speak! But I will tell you there is a process.

"You get helped into your armoured suit, you put a harness on, that straps you into this gimbal that moves at every single degree you can imagine.

"You're strapped in, you've got 50 tonnes of water splashing in your face, you've got fire, you've got steam, you've got, oh acting to do!

"And then you've got Guillermo on a microphone cracking jokes, and you're like 'Listen dude, now is not the time for your comedy routine!' but it was definitely an experience. It was an unbelievable experience, painful experience, but it was good."

Pacific Rim sees Elba team up with filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro for the first time as he returns to the director's chair.

Pacific Rim kicks off a busy period for the actor as he has also completed work on Second Coming, Thor: The Dark World, Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom and No Good Deed.

Pacific Rim is released 12th July.
