The film saw off the challenge from 12 Years A Slave, Ain't Them Bodies Saints, Before Midnight and Upstream Color to scoop the prize.
12 Years A Slave is widely regarded as the movie to watch this awards season, but it failed to win in the three categories in which it was nominated.
Matthew McConaughey showed that he could well be a force to be reckoned with at the Oscars as he scooped Best Actor. McConaughey takes on the role of AIDS activist Ron Woodroof in Dallas Buyers Club.
He saw off Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years A Slave), Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis), Robert Redford (All Is Lost) and Isaiah Washington (Blue Caprice).
Brie Larson triumphed in the Best Actress category as she saw off Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine), Scarlett Johansson (Don Jon), Amy Seimetz (Upstream Color) and Shailene Woodley (The Spectacular Now).
