Paul Greengrass has hinted that Jason Bourne has been 'living in the shadows' in the nine years that he has been away from our screens and not sunning himself on a beach.

Greengrass is set to return to the director's chair for the upcoming Jason Bourne, which is the fourth time that we have seen Damon take on the title role.

Jason Bourne is also the third collaboration between the director and the actor and their first since Green Zone. This new Bourne sequel has been a long time coming but it is set to be a movie not to miss this summer.

And while Greengrass has not given anything away, he has hinted as to what Bourne has been up to in the years that he has been away.

Speaking to EW, the filmmaker said: "He's been in the shadows of Europe. He's been active and he's been doing hard physical work. Definitely not sunning himself on the beach."

Greengrass went on to talk about returning to the franchise and says that he was 100% committed to the film and would not have made it otherwise.

He continued: "You don't make a movie unless you're 1000 percent committed to make the best movie we can, and you don't make this kind of movie unless you think it can be a worthy successor to the other movies we made. That phenomenal Jason Bourne shape was a segment of intent."

The Bourne Ultimatum was the last time that we saw Damon take on this role back in 2007 when the trilogy was seemingly brought to a close. While we have seen another Bourne film released - with Jeremy Renner in the central role - there has also been talk about Damon and Greengrass' return.

Greengrass has assembled a great cast for the new film Alicia Vikander, Tommy Lee Jones, and Vincent Cassel are also going to star. Julia Stiles is another familiar face as she is set to reprise the role of Nicky.

Jason Bourne is released 28th July.
