Jean Dujardin

Jean Dujardin

Jean Dujardin won the Best Actor Oscar last night for The Artist in what is his very first nomination.

The Best Actor category has been a tight call between Dujardin and George Clooney, both of the sharing the spoils in recent weeks.

But it was Dujardin who walked away with the prize as The Artist dominated the evening also winning Best Picture and Best Director.

Speaking as he collected his award Dujardin said: Whoah! Thank you! Whoa-hey! I love your country. Okay, thank you to the Academy.

"It's funny because in 1929, it wasn't Billy Crystal, but Douglas Fairbanks who hosted the first Oscar ceremony. Tickets cost $5, and it lasted 15 minutes. Times have changed!

"Though, thank you Douglas Fairbanks. Yes monsieur, your grandfather spirit and joie de vivre inspired me for this role."

Dujardin saw off competition from Clooney, Brad Pitt, Gary Oldman and Demián Bichir for the award.
