Cake has only just started preview screenings and Aniston's performance as Claire Simmons - who starts a relationship with a widower while seeing hallucinations of his dead wife - has been winning over the critics.

Aniston is no stranger to picking up Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for her work in Friends, but this is the first time that she has been recognised for her film work and this is her first solo nomination.

Speaking after she heard about the nomination, the actress said: "This is the best 6:00am wake up call ever. Words can't describe how blessed I feel to be recognised like this by my peers for this film. What an enormous feeling of joy and gratitude."

The Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role category is a tough one as Aniston finds herself nominated alongside Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything), Julianne Moore (Still Alice), Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl), and Reese Witherspoon (Wild).

Cake sees Aniston team up with director Daniel Barnz for the first time, as he returns to the director's chair for the first time since Won't Back Down back in 2012. Patrick Tobin is also aboard the project having penned the screenplay.

An all-star cast has been assembled as Aniston stars alongside Anna Kendrick, Britt Robertson, Misty Upham, and Sam Worthington - but it is Aniston that really steals the show.

Aniston is definitely one to watch out for this awards season as she could be a dark horse at the SAGs and possibly the Oscars. Currently, Julianne Moore is the favourite to snag the Best Actress Oscar for her performance in Still Alice - however, Felicity Jones and Reese Witherspoon are also favourites to receive nominations.

Cake is released in the UK on 20th February 2015.

The SAG Awards will be held on January 25, 2015 in Los Angeles.
