I know, we haven't seen Star Wars: The Force Awakens yet and we are already looking ahead to future projects in the pipeline.

The Force Awakens is the seventh film in the franchise and two more movies are in the pipeline to complete a new trilogy - we are also going to be treated to spin-off film Star Wars: Rogue One.

It was suggested that Abrams could be returning for Star Wars IX, but he has announced that he will not be in the director's chair.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the director said: "No, I'm not going to direct Episode IX, as much as I am deeply envious of anyone who gets to work with this group of people on the future movies."

There's currently no director and writers on board Star Wars IX and there is still time for Abrams to get on board - I guess we are just going to have to wait and see how it pans out.

As for Star Wars: Episode VIII, Rian Johnson is set to write and direct the next instalment. We haven't seen Johnson in the director's chair since his great sci-fi film Looper back in 2012.

Abrams is in the Star Wars director's chair for the first time this year with The Force Awakens, which is set to hit the big screen at the end of the year.

The Force Awakens is one of the most anticipated films of the year and is the first film for Abrams since the success of Star Trek Into Darkness back in 2013.

While the plot for the film is still being kept under-wraps, we do know that it will be set thirty years after events of Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi.

Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher are back as Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and Princess Leia, while Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, Gwendoline Christie, Adam, Driver, and Andy Serkis are just some of the new names on board the franchise.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is set to be one of the biggest films of the year and kick off a new era in this ever popular franchise.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is released 18th December.
