Lumley has retained her good looks through her career, but admits she is tired of the decades-long obsession that surrounds her attractiveness.

Asked if she considers such questions to be flattering, Joanna said: "No. It's just a pattern women's magazines have fallen into. It's always fashion, whether you're frightened of being old, whether you think you're ugly, or you should have a facelift."

Joanna did, however, admit that the focus of the questions has changed in recent years.

She told the Sunday Times newspaper: "I'm now also getting, 'What's it like for older women who can't get parts? I say, 'Don't ask me."

Joanna explained that while some other high-profile actresses may struggle to secure roles later in their career, it is not a problem she has encountered, admitting she is always busy with work.

The actress explained: "I'm sure it must be awful, but don't ask me, because I never stop working."

What's more, Joanna claimed she has turned into a "misery guts" as she has aged.

Joanna said: "You just think, 'Who is going to look at me and how could it matter?' I've got something 25 years old in the cupboard that looks mean and old fashioned now that I'm shocked by how much clothes cost. Really shocked.

"You see a nice little macintosh and think, 'That's adorable and will be about £170', and it's £1,000."
