Joanne Froggatt

Froggatt is one of the most exciting British actresses around and this will be her first feature film lead since shooting to global fame as Anna in Downton Abbey. As well as starring in the film, the actress will also take on the role of executive producer for the first time.

Speaking about the film, the actress said: "I have been truly inspired by Tom Ray and his family, and their incredible life and strength. I am honoured to be producing Starfish and dedicated to faithfully recreating his heart wrenching experience on the big screen."

The movie will see Froggatt star alongside Tom Riley as they play husband and wife Tom and Nicolas Ray. Bill Clark is in the director's chair and has penned the film's screenplay.

Starfish is based on the true-life story of Tom (Tom Riley) and Nicola Ray (Froggatt), whose lives changed overnight and beyond recognition when Tom contracted a rare and life-threatening illness. Tom survived, but at a price. When Tom Ray puts his small daughter to bed one chilly December evening, he has a healthy body, a beautiful home and a wife, Nic, expecting their second child.

By the next morning, all is in jeopardy as Tom is rushed to hospital with a dangerously uncertain prognosis. By the end of the year, Tom will have had four limbs amputated, parts of his face removed, and his life turned upside down.

Starfish is only the second feature film for Clark and comes nine years after he made his debut with The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey back in 2007.

We haven't seen Joanne on the big screen since the success of Filth back in 2013 as she has concentrated on the demands of Downton Abbey, a series that end with a Christmas special in a few weeks.

Starfish is a Genesius Pictures presentation in association with Unlimited Pictures of a Starfish Pictures Limited production with Origami Films Ltd, CrossDay and What's the Story. Producers are Pippa Cross (Chalet Girl, Bloody Sunday),Mel Paton and Ros Hubbard (A Hundred Streets).
