Jon Favreau has revealed that he was thrilled at the chance to tackle a smaller movie where he only had to answer to himself.

Favreau is back in the director's chair with Chef, which sees him move away from big budget blockbusters such as Iron Man. But the director admits that he jumped at the chance to do something a little different.

Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, the director said: "After doing a lot of big movies with a lot of concerns revolving around the studios and the politics of marketing and release schedules, it was nice to do something very small where I didn't have to answer to anybody but myself.

"I started making films of this size - acting in movies that I wrote and directed. I see people like Louis CK, Larry David and Lena Dunham doing it and every time I watched their shows, I would think about how much fun it was and how much I missed it.

"So when the script for Chef popped into my head, I figured it was a good opportunity to try that again and it was one of the best experiences I can remember having."

Favreau will star in Chef as well as being in the director's chair, while John Leguizamo, Scarlett Johansson, Dustin Hoffman, Sofia Vergara and Robert Downey Jr are also on board the film.

Chef is the first film directorial outing for Favreau since Cowboys & Aliens. He will be returning to the director's chair with The Jungle Book.

This is an adaptation of the Rudyard Kipling novel, and Favreau is currently casting the project.

Chef is released 18th June.
