Joseph Gordon-Levitt says that Don Jon is not a movie about pornography.

Gordon-Levitt will make his feature film directorial debut with Don Jon, a movie that will be screened at the BFI London Film Festival later this month.

And while there is a theme of pornography in the film, the director says that this is not at the heart of the movie.

Speaking to Red Eye Chicago he said: "Certainly [porn is] a central symbol in the movie, but it's sort of about how people treat each other like things.

"And I think pornography is one of the examples in the movie, but there's lots of pieces of lots of different kinds of media in the movie."

"I think that there's plenty of examples of mainstream media, whether it's movies or TV shows or commercials or anything else, that are just as guilty of that as pornography is. Of reducing, especially women, to sex objects."

Gordon-Levitt has penned the screenplay and will also star in the movie. Scarlett Johansson, Julianne Moore and Tony Danza are all also on board.

The movie premiered at the Sundance Film Festival at the beginning of the year and has been going well on the festival circuit during 2013.

Don Jon is released 15th November.
