Joss Whedon says that Avengers Assemble is not the perfect movie.

Avengers Assemble hit the big screen last summer and went on to be the biggest grossing movie of the year as is smashed through the $1 billion barrier.

And while the movie was a massive hit the director admits that there was a 'haphazardness' in the way that the film came together.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly the director said: "When I think of a great film, I think of something that's either structured so perfectly like The Matrix or made so lovingly like The Godfather Part 2.

"There was haphazardness in the way it comes together - not just the people, but the scenes," he told Entertainment Weekly.

"I don't think you'd look at it and go, 'This is a model of perfect structure'. You'd go, 'This is working. I like it'.

"I'm proud of it and I like its imperfections. The thing I cared most about - making a summer movie like the ones from my childhood - is the thing that I pulled off."

Whedon is currently working on The Avengers: Age of Ultron, which is set to begin shooting next year.

The movie will see Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo and Jeremy Renner reprise their superhero roles, in a movie that will being Marvel's Phase Two of movies to a close.

This is already one of the most anticipated films, but we will not be seeing it until summer 2015.

Before then Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Solider and Guardians of the Galaxy will all be released.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron is released 1st May 2015.
