Dame Judi Dench

Judi Dench says there is a lack of roles for older actresses.

Dench will be returning to the big screen next week with her new film Philomena: which is based on the incredible true story of Philomena Lee.

The Oscar winning actress takes on the title role in a film that follows Philomena's fifty year search for the child that was taken away from her decades before.

She told Time Out magazine: "There aren't [enough roles], considering the amount of people who are my age. But then there never have been.

"Look at Shakespeare: there aren't enough women parts in Shakespeare. You feel very, very lucky if you get to play any. You feel very lucky indeed."

Philomena has had the critics raving on the festival circuit and Dench is already being tipped as a major Oscar contender - she has never won the Best Actress gong.

The film sees her reunite with director Stephen Frears, while Steve Coogan is also on board.

Moving forward, the veteran actress hinted she might be focusing on her theatre career, which she has often described as her first love.

Quizzed if theatre was still her favourite medium, she mused: "I'd say theatre... But I don't think there's much between telly and movies. It's the same process."
