Jurassic World

Jurassic World has been on release for just six weeks and it has already grossed $1.522 billion at the global box office - overtaking the total of $1,519 billion set by Avengers Assemble back in 2012.

However, the movie has still some way to go if it wants to rival Avatar and Titanic for the top two spots. These two movies are the only movies to have broken the $2 billion barrier; Avatar is the highest grossing film with $2,787 billion, which Titanic is comfortably in second on $2,186 billion.

Avengers Assemble has now slipped to fourth in the all time list, while Fast & Furious 7 rounds off the top five with a box office gross of $1,511 billion.

Jurassic World is the first Jurassic Park movie to hit the big screen since Jurassic Park III back in 2001 and has really delivered at the box office for Universal Pictures.

Not only is Jurassic World the third highest grossing film of all time, it is the highest grossing film of 2015 and also broke the record to become the film that grossed $1 billion in the quickest time. The movie achieved this feat in just thirteen days - breaking the record of seventeen days set by Fast & Furious 7 earlier this year.

Jurassic World, Fast & Furious 7 and Avengers: Age of Ultron are the three films that have grossed over $1 billion at the global box office this year. And while there are some big films to come - Spectre and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 - it seems unlikely that Jurassic World will be de-throned as the highest grossing film of 2015.

It was also revealed this week that a sequel to Jurassic World is already in the pipeline. The movie is set to hit the big screen in 2018 and will see Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard return. Colin Trevorrow looks set to pen the screenplay but it seems unlikely that he will return to direct the sequel. Steven Spielberg will once again be involved as executive producer.

Jurassic World remains on general release in the UK.
