The movie will see Fishburne reunite with Reeves, with whom he starred with in the Matrix series, as Reeves is set to reprise the title role.

Chad Stahelski, who directed the first film, is back at the helm, and it will mark the first time that Fishburne has worked with the filmmaker.

Speaking to Collider about getting involved with the project, the actor said: "Keanu and I remained friends and we saw each other and I told him that I had seen the film and loved it. He was about to start it again and I was like 'you have to talk to Chad and tell that you boy Fish wants to come and get down. I really wanted to be part of it. They found something for me to do. It's really cool."

Fishburne is set to take on the role of The Bowler King in the new film and, while giving little away, he did drop a little hint as to where he fits into the story.

He continued: "I am not part of the continental world but I am part of another world that exists inside the world of John Wick, that wasn't something that was clear in the first movie."

Reeves and Fishburne will be joined on the cast list by Ian McShane, Bridget Moynahan, Peter Stormare, Lance Reddick, John Leguizamo, and Common.

John Wick 2 is set for a February 2017 release in the U.S. but no UK release date has yet been announced.

As for Fishburne, he is back on the big screen this week as he reprises the role of Perry White in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

The actor has also completed work on sci-fi film Passengers, which sees him star alongside Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Pratt, and Michael Sheen.
