The Devil in the White City is based on the non-fiction book by Erik Larson about American serial killer H.H. Holmes, who killed a number of people at the Chicago World's Fair in 1893 - it is actually unknown the exact number of lives that he took.

DiCaprio is set to take on the role of Holmes in the film, which will be a very different kind of role for the popular actor. We have seen him play real characters many times before in films such as Aviator and The Wolf of Wall Street, but this looks set to be one of the darkest characters that he has ever tackled.

Deadline are reporting that Paramount Pictures have sealed the deal to acquire the rights to Larson's book and Scorsese is set to return to the director's chair for the film. Billy Ray - who penned the screenplay for Captain Phillips - is also on board to adapt the book into a script.

The Devil in the White City is set to be the sixth collaboration between DiCaprio and Scorsese and comes after the duo have enjoyed success with Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed, Shutter Island, and The Wolf of Wall Street.

While working with Scorsese, DiCaprio has picked up two of his three Best Actor Oscar nominations - getting the nod for The Aviator and The Wolf of Wall Street.

The Wolf of Wall Street was the last collaboration between the pair as they told the true story of Jordan Belfort back in 2014.

As well as taking on the lead role in the film, DiCaprio is also set to produce the new movie alongside Scorsese, Jennifer Davisson, and Stacey Sher.

2015 has been a quiet film year for DiCaprio, in fact The Wolf of Wall Street was the last time that we saw him on the big screen. However, he is set to return at the beginning of next year with The Revenant.

The Revenant will see the actor team up with filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu for the time, while reuniting with actor Tom Hardy; the pair worked together on Inception.

DiCaprio is set to play Hugh Glass, a 1820s frontiersman who is looking for revenge after being left for dead. The movie is already surrounded in Oscar whispers and DiCaprio could find himself in the Best Actor race once again.

There's currently no word on when we might see The Devil in the White City hit the big screen.
