Maggie Gyllenhaal says that she is grateful for the 'revolutionary' roles that there currently are for women in television and film.

Gyllenhaal triumphed at the Golden Globes on Sunday night as she walked away with the gong for Best Actress in a Miniseries of TV Movie for her central role in The Honourable Woman.

Speaking as she collected her award, the actress said: "When I look around the room at the women in here and I think about the performances that I've watched this year.

"What I see, actually, are women who are sometimes powerful and sometimes not, sometimes sexy and sometimes not...what I think is new is the wealth of roles for actual women in television and film. That's what I think is revolutionary and evolutionary, and it's what's turning me on."

The Honourable Woman saw Gyllenhaal return to the small screen last year as she took on the role of Nessa Stein in the political drama, which was directed by Hugo Blick.

Gyllenhaal saw off competition from Jessica Lange, Frances McDormand, Frances O'Connor and Allison Tolman for American Horror Story, Olive Kitteridge, The Missing, and Fargo.

Other big winners from television included Jeffrey Tambor for Transparent, which also won Best Comedy Series. While Fargo won Best Miniseries or TV Movie with Billy Bob Scooping Best Actor in a Miniseries for the same show.

There was also some British success as Ruth Wilson won Best Actress in a Drama Series for The Affair, and Joanne Froggatt won Best Supporting Actress for Downton Abbey
