Webb was in the director's chair for The Amazing Spiderm-Man 1 and 2 with Andrew Garfield in the title role. Now Spider-Man is returning to the Marvel fold and will see Tom Holland play a younger version of the popular character.

And while Webb will no longer be involved with the project, he reveals that he is excited to see in which direction this take the character of Peter Parker.

Speaking to MTV, the director said: "I'm really psyched that Spider-Man is going back to the Marvel universe, I'm really excited to see that incarnation. Jon Watts is directing it, I knew him from the old music video days and he'd done some really fantastic music videos, so it's really exciting. It's sad a little bit to surrender that in a way - but it's as it must be, I guess.

"I think there's a huge capacity for reinvention within the realm of the Spider-Man universe. It happens all the time in the comics, and as I've said many times before, Spider-Man belongs on screen. And there's a lot of different ways to interpret that character whether it's Miles Morales or Peter Parker or whomever. I'm really curious to see how that evolves."

We are going to get our first glimpse of Holland as Peter Parker in Captain America: Civil War next year before he goes on to star in a stand alone solo movie - there have been some rumours flying around that suggest that we may see Robert Downey Jr pop up in that solo film.

This will be the third incarnation of Peter Parker since Spider-Man was released back in 2002; Holland will be following in the footsteps of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.

As for Webb, we haven't seen him in the director's chair since The Amazing Spider Man 2 last year, but he is set to return with the Limitless TV series- which is filming right now. The movie is an adaptation of the 2011 film and we will see Bradley Cooper appear in the series as Eddie Morra.
