Martin Freeman has become the latest actor to join the growing cast of Captain America: Civil War.

Freeman has followed in the footsteps of his Sherlock co-star Benedict Cumberbatch by joining the Marvel Universe as the studio confirmed his involvement in the project yesterday.

However, while it was announced that the actor was on board, Marvel did not release any details about the role he will be tackling in the film.

Speaking about Freeman, producer Kevin Feige said that they were impressed with the range of work that Freeman has starred in over the years.

"From his roles as Bilbo Baggins and Doctor Watson to Tim in The Office, Martin's range from the dramatic to the comedic has consistently impressed us. We couldn't be more honoured or excited to have such a talented actor join the Marvel Cinematic Universe."

Filming is due to get underway on Civil War and will see Anthony and Joe Russo return to the director's chair - this is their second Marvel movie and comes after the huge critical and commercial success of Captain America: The Winter Solider last year.

This will be the third solo movie for actor Chris Evans as he reprises the title role. There are plenty of other familiar faces on the cast list as Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr, Jeremy Renner, and Anthony Mackie are back as Black Widow, Iron Man, Hawkeye, and Falcon.

Daniel Bruhl is set to be one of the other new faces as he is set to play villain Baron Zemo in the film. Civil War is also set to introduce Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther before the actor heads off to star in his own solo film.

Civil War looks set to be the biggest Captain America movie yet as Steve Rodgers will go head to head with Iron Man over government plans to make superheroes register with them. Civil War is one of the most iconic stories arcs in the comic books and I am already excited about seeing this played out on the big screen.

This new casting news comes just days after Evans revealed that Civil War is going to set up the 'real battle' in Infinity War - the next Avengers movie that will be split into two parts.

Captain America: Civil War is released 29th April 2016.
