Matt Damon has been linked to a role in new sci-fi drama The Martian.

Damon is believed to be in talks for the lead role for the adaptation of the e-book by Andy Weir.

The movie has been described as a cross between 'Apollo 13' and 'Cast Away', with an American space explorer trapped on Mars and desperate to find a way back to Earth before his supplies run out.

While Damon - who has shot three sci-fi movies recently, 'Elysium', 'The Zero Theorem' and 'Interstellar' - is said to be keen on the movie, contract negotiations are currently up in the air following the departure of director Drew Goddard, according to The Wrap

Goddard has left the project just to his commitment to new film The Sinister Six, and it appears that Fox will not wait for him to complete that movie.

As for Damon, he was last seen on the big screen with The Monuments Men and The Zero Theorem.

He will be back with Christopher Nolan's Interstellar, but he has revealed that it is only a small role.
