Earlier this year, McConaughey revealed that he had read scripts for both Marvel and DC movie projects - obviously leading to a whole host of speculation as to which films and roles he may have been offered.

Variety have reported that the Oscar winning actor was, in fact, offered the villain role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, but has turned the opportunity down.

We have yet to learn who the villain is set to be in the highly anticipated sequel and the search for the actor to take on that role goes on.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 is already one of the most anticipated films of 2017 and will see James Gunn back in the director's chair.

We already know that Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, and Dave Bautista are set to return for the sequel and Pom Klementieff has just been added to the cast list.

Klementieff is best known for her role in Spike Lee's adaptation of Oldboy in 2013 is has landed a mystery role in the upcoming Marvel project. We are going to have to wait and see who she will be playing. This is set to be the biggest film of her career and looks set to send her star rocketing.

Whether we see McConaughey in the Marvel of DC Universe going forward really does remain to be seen.

We haven't seen McConaughey on the big screen since the success of Interstellar back in 2014 but he is set to return with The Sea of Trees, which sees him team up with filmmaker Gus Van Sant.

The actor has also completed work on Gold and The Free State of Jones, both of which are set to be released in 2016.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 is released 28th April 2017.
