Sheen is one of the most versatile and in demand actors working at the moment and we have seen him move from big blockbuster franchises to more character driven work.

And he says that it is all about making a connection with the script and with the character - even if that sees you make some unexpected choices along the way.

Speaking to the Huffington Post, the actor said: "People will say to me, 'You do things like 'The Queen' and 'Frost/Nixon' and then you do 'Twilight', 'Tron' and 'Underworld'?'

"There's no room for snobbishness, it doesn't matter what genre you're working in, you just make a connection with the work, and if it gets you going, it excites you and it's the kind of work I'd like to go and see and I have a wide range of tastes."

We are going to be seeing Sheen tackle the period drama this week as he teams up with Carey Mulligan and director Thomas Vinterberg for an adaptation of Thomas Hardy's Far From The Madding Crowd.

Sheen will take on the role of William Boldwood, one of three potential suitors for central character Bathsheba Everdene - played by Mulligan. This is the first big screen outing for Sheen this year.

He has already completed work on Alice Through the Looking Glass, which sees him voice the character of the White Rabbit once again, alongside Mia Wasikowska and Johnny Depp.

He is currently filming his latest project Oppenheimer Strategies, which sees him team up with director and writer Joseph Cedar. Dan Stevens, Steve Buscemi, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Richard Gere are all also on the cast list.

Far From The Madding Crowd is released 1st May.
