Morbius is a forthcoming Sony movie that was set to release on January 28th, 2022; however, the title has now been delayed, for the seventh time, and is set to instead drop in April this year (2022).

Morbius follows Doctor Michael Morbius (Jared Leto), a man with a deadly disease that will most likely kill him, and others afflicted with it, unless he takes a rather sizable risk.

The Doctor performs an unorthodox experiment, one that leaves him with superhuman abilities and traits similar to that of a bat. Now, Morbius is a combination of man and monster, and it seems unclear which one will reign supreme.

Many comic fans are somewhat sceptical to see Leto in this leading role, as his performance as The Joker in David Ayer’s 2016 film Suicide Squad, didn't go down too well with a lot of those watching.

However, the actor definitely deserves a shot at redemption, and Morbius appears to be the perfect opportunity for Leto to really showcase what he can do. He appears to suit the role he has been cast in, with trailers showcasing his brooding performance.

It has been quite the journey for Morbius in regard to its release date, as it was first set to release in July of 2020, but the unfortunate global pandemic put that on hold for a few months.

The next date for the title’s release was March 2021, in the hopes that the pandemic would have subsided by then, which of course it didn’t. The movie was then delayed a whopping seven months to October 2021, with more hope of the pandemic dissipating.

Morbius was then delayed, again, when Sony film Venom: Let There Be Carnage needed to be pushed back, landing Morbius’ release date in January 2022.

Now, after an announcement from Sony, Morbius will release on April 1st, 2022. This is the seventh overall delay for the title, as Sony has moved the release date a few times in addition to more significant delays.

This news follows the success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which has absolutely crushed the box office; the title’s delay also comes with the news of positive Covid tests occurring as a result of the unfortunate Omicron variant.

This seventh release date delay for Morbius poses the question of whether or not fans will still venture to the cinemas to see it; the film does have a significant amount of interest directed towards it, but will movie-goers still be interested after seven delays?

While April 2022 isn’t exactly a busy month for movies (yet), there is a lot of chatter surrounding Morbius and its potential to impress, which it very well may do upon release.

It has been confirmed by trailers that the feature does indeed have ties to Tom Holland’s Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) Spider-Man, as a poster of the webbed wonder can be seen in a trailer for Morbius with ‘Murderer’ written across it; a nod to the events of Spider-Man: Far From Home

Another tie to the MCU comes in the form of Spider-Man: Homecoming villain The Vulture, played by Michael Keaton, who suggests to Morbius that the two of them should keep in touch.

With the success of the MCU rising, and the interest in the franchise becoming more significant than ever before, Morbius may be left in the dust as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and other Marvel properties are seemingly taking over 2022 as they did 2021.

This seems unlikely, however, as delays are sadly becoming more and more common due to the pandemic still wreaking havoc on film schedules across the world, so another delay (even if it is the seventh) among many shouldn’t dampen the excitement for Morbius too much.

Morbius will now release on April 1st, 2022.
