Baccarin is set to star alongside Ryan Reynolds in the new year as she takes on the role of Vanessa Carlisle, the girlfriend of Wade Wilson. And while she reveals that she didn't get to read the scrip until she has almost landed the role, she loved that her character was well developed.

Speaking to Collider about what drew her to the film, the actress said: "The script was really great. I didn't get to read it until I was close to getting the job, so it was a little nerve wracking, but once I did I was so excited as it's so rare in a movie like this that the female character is actually really good and not just servicing the story or servicing the hero and she's got her own thing going on and she's really funny and it's a really great part.

"And, of course Ryan being attached was awesome because I think he's just perfect for this role. He's made to play this guy."

Deadpool sees Baccarin team up with Reynolds for the first time while Tim Miller is making his feature film directorial debut with the project.

Deadpool is the first of a string of comic book movies set to be released next year and it is already one of the most anticipated. Reynolds and Baccarin are joined on the cast list by Gina Carano, Ed Skrein, and T.J. Miller.

Baccarin has been moving between TV and film projects over the last year as we have been seeing her as Dr Leslie Thompkins in TV series Gotham.

She has also lent her voice to animation film Malevolent alongside William Shatner, Ray Wise, and Bill Moseley.

Deadpool is released 4th February.
