Watts is one of the new additions to the cast list as we are introduced to the character of Evelyn - the mother of Four - for the first time in this second film.

And it was the complexities of this character and the decision to leave behind her son to save herself that the Oscar nominated actress was drawn to.

Speaking to Hero Complex, the actress said: "[Evelyn] is someone who had to fake her own death and escape from her real life because her husband was abusive and she felt that it was life-threatening. [She] had to also abandon and leave her son, who is Four.

"So in this film, we see that she's trying to resume a relationship with him, and of course Four is not immediately open to that. Although I'm sure he's curious, he holds resentment and anger towards her for having left, and [is] also not sure if he can trust her.

"There is something about her - which is why I as an actor wanted to take this role on, for all the complexities in her - and it is sort of clear that there is an ulterior motive going on, but we need to work out just what that is, and that will become even clearer in the next movie."

Insurgent is the second of Veronica Roth's novels to be adapted for the big screen and comes a year after the success of Divergent.

Watts is not the only new face on the cast list, as Octavia Spencer is introduced as Johanna. Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Kate Winslet, Jai Courtney, Ansel Elgort and Miles Teller are all reprising their roles from the first film.

Robert Schwentke is in the director's chair this time around and looks set to star with the franchise for Allegiant: Part 1 - which will also see Watts reprise the role of Evelyn.

Away from the franchise, Watts will be back on the big screen with While We're Young next month, and she has also completed work on The Sea of Trees, Three Generations, and Demolition.

She is currently filing her latest project Shut In, which will see her star alongside Oliver Platt and David Cubitt. Farren Blackburn is in the director's chair.

Insurgent is out now.
