It was announced last year that a fourth Toy Story film had been given the green light by Pixar and we would see John Lasseter team up with Josh Cooley in the director's chair.

Docter says that he did help out at the beginning but has now stepped away from the project. He has also dropped a little hint as to what we can expect for the upcoming film.

Speaking to Collider, the director said: "Well like all of us I've helped out, especially at the beginning. But right now it's being directed by John Lasseter, co-directed by Josh Cooley. They're really doing a great job.

"It's taking things into a little bit of a new direction which I think will really surprise people, and hopefully not feel like the first three but still familiar in a way. I don't know if that even makes sense but it's pretty awesome."

It was back in 2010 when Toy Story 3 hit the big screen and went on to be a critical smash and gross over $1 billion at the global box office. It looked like the franchise was done and dusted but a new chapter is on the horizon... however, we are going to have to wait until 2018.

Tom Hanks and Tim Allen will back to voice the central characters of Woody and Buzz Lightyear. There is no word about the film's story.

As for Docter, we haven't seen him in the director's chair since Inside Out last year; which was one of the best films to hit the big screen in 2015.

And more success could come the way of Inside Out over the next few weeks as it is the hot favourite to scoop the Best Animated Feature Oscar at the end of the month.

Inside Out would follow in the footsteps of Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Wall-E, Up, Toy Story 3, and Brave - Pixar movies that have all gone on to triumph at the Oscars.

Inside Out is nominated alongside Anomalisa, Boy & the World, Shaun the Sheep Movie, and When Marnie Was There.

Toy Story 4 will be released 13th July 2018.
