Rapace played main character Elizabeth Shaw in Sir Ridley Scott's 2012 'Alien' prequel 'Prometheus' but was not attached to the sequel.

However, according to Deadline, Rapace has arrived on set on location in Sydney, Australia, to shoot scenes as the archaeologist for the project.

At the end of 'Prometheus', Elizabeth Shaw was the only human survivor from the crew's mission to distant moon LV-223 to meet extra-terrestrial race the Engineers and discover how humans were created.

Shaw was seen escaping the destroyed moon with severely damaged android David, portrayed by Michael Fassbender.

'Alien: Covenant' is the second film in a planned prequel trilogy that leads to Scott's sci-fi horror classic 'Alien' - which starred Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley.

As the story is set a decade after the events of 'Prometheus' it has been speculated that Rapace will be filming flashback scenes, something which 20th Century Fox is yet to confirm.

Fassbender is reprising his role as David and the rest of the cast includes Billy Crudup, Katherine Waterston, Danny McBride, Demian Bichir and Jussie Smollett.

The details of the plot are a closely guarded secret but the Engineers are expected to return and film fans will see the continued evolution of the acid-blooded xenomorph.

Scott, 78, is directing from a script by Jack Paglen, Michael Green and John Logan and 'Alien: Covenant' is scheduled for release in August 2017.
