While the plans aren't set in stone for Stewart to play this new version of Professor X, the actor admits that he is excited at the idea of taking this popular character in a different direction.

Speaking to Digital Spy, the actor said: "There is, I am told, a Wolverine movie in development that would include Charles Xavier, but a very different Charles Xavier from the one we have seen before. And I don't quite know what that means, but I'm very excited about it," Stewart said.

"He's a terrific character, but I am looking forward - if what I've been told is true - to a different version of Charles. We shall see."

Wolverine 3 would see Stewart reunite with Hugh Jackman for the first time since the huge success of X-Men: Days of Future Past last year. While the character of Xavier did make a small appearance at the end of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, it would be the first time that Stewart has really stepped into the solo Wolverine franchise.

Wolverine 3 is expected to hit the big screen in 2017 and will come four years after The Wolverine, which was the second solo film for this character and was released back in 2013.

The new Wolverine sequel will see James Mangold return to the director's chair for his second consecutive Wolverine movie. No other cast members have been confirmed nor do we know which other mutant characters may be making an appearance.

As for Stewart, he lent his voice to Ted 2 this summer and has also completed work on feature film Christmas Eve. He will be returning to the small screen with new TV series Blunt Talk.

The series will see Stewart take on the central role of Walter Blunt, a British newscaster who moves to Los Angeles to hold a talk show. Adrian Scarborough, Timm Sharp, and Jacki Weaver are also on board.

Wolverine 3 is released 2nd March 2017.
