R2-D2 poses with J.J. Abrams

J.J. Abrams has hinted that R2-D2 could be returning to Star Wars: Episode VII.

Abrams sent fans into a frenzy when an image of his appeared on Twitter.

Abrams posted a photo of himself, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and some crew members posing alongside R2-D2 on his production company Bad Robot's Twitter account yesterday (14.11.13).

The caption reads: "Hi from the workshop! #StarWarsVII (sic)"

There has been no mention of whether R2-D2 or C-3PO will be part of the latest instalment of the Star Wars franchise.

No cast has yet been confirmed for the film, but original star Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher have been linked with the project since it has been announced.

The likes of Benedict Cumberbatch, Simon Pegg and Oscar nominee Saoirse Ronan have all been names that have been batted around in recent months.

Nationwide open auditions in the UK took place last week - London, Glasgow, Dublin and Bristol all had auditions.

'Star Wars: Episode VII' will hit cinemas in December 2015.
