Warner Bros. UK geared up the promotion for their upcoming film Ready Player One, based on the best-selling novel of the same name from Ernest Cline, by releasing a brilliant new poster for the movie. Featuring the majority of the film’s leading characters, the poster sees everybody united – at least for a short while – and you can check it out below:
Set a few decades in the future in 2045, Ready Player One sees the world on the brink of collapse, with its people finding their only salvation in the virtual reality world of the OASIS. Created by the eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance), the virtual land is flipped on its head when Halliday dies, and leaves his immense fortune behind to the first person who can find his digital Easter Egg, hidden inside the OASIS.
What follows is a worldwide competition that unlikely young hero Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) is thrust right into the centre of, joining the contest and being hurled into one of the most exciting treasure hunts the world of entertainment has ever seen. Though the hunt is meant to be a fun one for the biggest OASIS fans, it quickly becomes dangerous, because of the massive prize.
Sheridan is joined by a brilliant cast including Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn and T.J. Miller, with Simon Pegg also starring.
Steven Spielberg directs the film, with a screenplay from Zak Penn and Ernest Cline. Spielberg, Donald De Line, Kristie Macosko Krieger and Dan Farah produce, with Adam Somner, Daniel Lupi, Chris DeFaria and Bruce Berman all serving as executive producers.
From what we’ve seen to-date, the teasers for Ready Player One promise some brilliant geeky culture references. There have been some of the obvious inclusions that come straight from the novel, and some that have been added in because of their recent impact on the world of pop culture. One of our particular favourites was when we saw Overwatch character Tracer running across what looked like a battlefield!
Ready Player One has all the right ingredients to become a major blockbuster hit, so let’s hope people get their bums in movie theatre seats when it hits the big screen later this year.
